Healthy Wage Competition – Is it a Challenge You Should Take?

I lost Weight…Show Me the Money!!

No, you are not seeing things. It actually says show me the money! People are actually getting paid to lose weight. How cool is this? Sites like HealthyWage are now offering competition for simply losing weight. People can sign up as individuals or join teams to win money. How many of us struggle with weight loss and motivation and simply need a little, or BIG, incentive?  Well,  leading academic research shows that money enhances weight loss success, making dieters significantly more likely to lose weight. I’d say that sounds pretty convincing.

Does it really Pay?

While it does make sense that a little healthy competition would entice someone to lose weight, I wondered if anyone actually had success with HealthyWage.

In comes Nate C., From Centre, PA, who while awaiting the birth of his second child, decided he needed to make a change if he was going to help his wife care for their kids. And, make a change he sure did. Nate lost a whopping 107 pounds and won $300. Who says you can’t lose weight while losing sleep caring for a newborn? I guess Nate just debunked that thought!

Sue Johnson, wife and mother of three, who despite some obstacles, found a way to stay strong and make no excuses. Kicked the sugary drinks and Hershey bars, to find herself well on the way to success. Sue had started her weight loss journey at Weight Watchers and found HealhtyWage to be a great opportunity to keep her moving forward and motivated.  She lost a total of 100 pounds, 78 pounds while competing at HealthyWage and won $300.

Theresa J, Sarasota of Florida lost 36 pounds and won $300. After only three months, Theresa dropped 20 pounds.  At the six-month mark, she had reached her goals. There were days that she did not feel like exercising and days when her meals were not as nutritious as they should be, but the motivation she had from others helped to keep her on track. Now, Theresa said she wasn’t frivolous or a gambler, and signed up to give her that extra push she needed. I’d say she has a lucky hand!

Are There Any Cons to Consider?

  • You might want to be careful about how they disperse your winnings. I did find someone who ran into a slight problem after winning. Luckily for him, it wasn’t a huge deal.  John Oswald says,  “I actually won a HealthyWage 3 years ago. I put up $1,500 to lose 40 pounds in 6 months to win $600. They sent me a check for $2,100 and a 1099. I contacted the IRS to ask how to handle it since I had only made $600, how do I deduct the other $1500. The IRS responded that I was required to pay taxes on the entire amount. I inquired about the possibility of using the gambling method of deducting what I put up and they said that if you look at the HealthyWage website, it specifically says that it is NOT gambling. The IRS went on to say that HealthyWage has no gaming license and internet gambling is illegal. So there is no basis for deducting the amount that was ‘wagered’. Luckily, my winnings were enough that I still didn’t lose money, but many people could end up losing money if they follow the law regarding taxes. I believe that HealthyWage should issue 2 checks to each HealthyWager winner. The first being a refund and the second being the ‘winnings’ and issue a 1099 only on the second one, if necessary. There is never a need to issue a 1099 on a refund.” If you are winning anything over $600, you might find yourself in a situation like John. Keep this in mind.
  • If you are on a team and some members of your team don’t do well, it is pretty obvious that you may stand to lose more than weight.

  •  There are no refunds. If you lose a bet, you lose your money.

  1. WOW!

What an idea. We all know when everything else fails, MONEY is our motivation in life.
I am going to have to try this one.

I also read you “con” that the winnings will be taxed by the IRS.

I don’t think I am going to worry about that one, I would rather loose the weight!

    1. I agree, what better way to motivate yourself to lose weight than to throw in the money component? I think it is a pretty neat idea. And, I like that you can do it alone or with a team.

  2. That’s an awesome incentive to lose weight! If I had some extra cash, I’d do it, definitely. As it is, I’m still breastfeeding and have to limit my weight loss goals at the moment. I have been thinking about kicking the sugar habit recently though, so I’m very glad to have found your site:) I’m bookmarking you! Thanks 🙂

    1. Thank you, Erica! And, congratulations on your baby. I plan to try it too at some point. I really like that it allows you to compete independently or with a group. I am thinking about taking it to the workplace and seeing if my colleagues will join me 🙂 Anyhow, if you’re trying to kick the sugar habit, I recommend WHOLE30 for sure. There is a section in the book that talks about nursing mothers. It takes some prepping, mentally and food wise. But, it will really adjust your relationship with food. Anyhow, best of luck and I look forward to seeing you back.

  3. Thank you for this! Receiving money to lose weight is a great incentive! That is honestly amazing and must motivate so many people looking to become healthy and fit. I love how you put the testimonies of past members who have received joy from this program. Again, many thanks.

    1. Thank you. When I stumbled upon this idea I thought it was pretty neat. I know it may not be what everyone is interested in doing, but for those of us who need that extra incentive, I think it is a great motivator. I look forward to seeing you back on my site. Thanks for stopping by.
